Expert Insight: High Point Spring Market 2023

Following interior design trends like fashion trends is fun and something I pay attention to.  But, like fashion, I prefer to lean into what I naturally gravitate toward and not deny myself something because it is not currently in style. If I like it, if it suits me, that's all I need to know.  However, a part of me enjoys feeling fashionable, so I completely understand when a client asks what other people are doing or what's in style. Aside from enjoying trend watching, I also see being on top of what is current as part of my job as an interior designer. Not only to know what is fashionable but also to be aware of material innovations that could make a difference in our daily lives.

I go to High Point not just to soak in what's new trend-wise but also to be aware of what the different vendors offer, making me more efficient when sourcing things for my clients. I didn't attend Spring Market, so I listened to the recaps.  The ripple effects of the pandemic are still around, and I can't wait to give you some of the best news I've heard in quite a while.

 Find #1: Organic/Biophilia

This desire to connect with nature continues to stand firm showing itself in rich textures like boucle, warm neutral tones, and the mixing of linen fabrics, live edge wood, rough concrete, hair, and hide. This cozy, earthy look also shows itself in the curved furniture I've seen more of in the past two years.  Gently curving sofas and table legs, round feet, and sensual lines, we haven't seen in years. Adding a few organic pieces to your home brings a human, relaxed, peaceful spirit to a room with many hard lines or ornate details.

Find #2: Made in the USA

Furnishing a room or completing a remodel during or shortly after the pandemic forced designers to rethink where they sourced things. It was out of necessity but has changed how many people think about the value of buying locally, reusing, repurposing, and supporting American, even North American-made products.  I see this as going hand in hand with more interest in decreasing our impact on the environment, the health of our economy and supporting small local businesses.  This trend shows itself in more options for products made of recycled materials, manufacturers choosing sustainable methods of production, and the strong sales of vintage and antiques.

Find #3: More Fun

I couldn't help but mention a couple of exciting and interesting things. Gone are the days of all-gray or all-white rooms; color is back, plaid is having a moment, and purple shades of eggplants are everywhere. Not a color for everyone, but for those who are bold enough, I see eggplant as a rather timeless color that doesn't remind me of any particular era. I imagine it would look fabulous on powder room walls, an area rug, or the upholstery on a sofa. Some things that make my heart happy include whimsy coming back on the scene and that there are no rules, dominant styles, or looks to aim for. Interior design is highly personalized at the moment, and I love that.

Last but not least, the 30 to 40-week lead times are over. There are more in-stock items and lots of inventory, including new introductions, and the supply chain is finally normalizing.  There are a few hiccups; that's life, but it's gotten so much better. Let's all breathe a sigh of relief and buy ourselves an eggplant pillow or two to cheer up our living rooms.

Thank you for joining me in considering what High Point revealed this Spring.
