Design Lessons from the Desert: What the Southwest Taught Me About Home

In June, our family took a long-awaited adventure to the South West. It was our son's very first airplane ride and the first time any of us had explored Sedona, the Grand Canyon, or Zion National Park. It was all more breathtaking than I had expected.

As we stood beneath vast skies and towering canyon walls, I was reminded of the healing power of nature and the importance of slowing down and being present.

Back home, I found myself reflecting on how these natural experiences connect with the spaces we live in every day. Interior design isn’t just about making things look good, it’s about creating environments that support how we want to feel and live. The beauty, balance, and boldness of the Southwest offered up reminders and inspiration I’m sharing with you today.

Earthy Doesn't Mean Dull
Sedona's red rocks, sun-baked cliffs, and dusty trails were warm and calming; never boring. This reminds us that earth tones are so grounding and create a feeling of serenity. Soft terracottas, sun-washed neutrals, and desert greens bring that same sense of peace and rootedness indoors.

Every Space Needs a Little Green
Every pop of green in the Southwest felt like a gift. This contrast reminds us that greenery, even a single plant, makes a big difference in a space. Your greenery could be from live plants, botanical prints, or natural materials; green elements bring vibrancy, texture, and promote wellbeing.

3. Bold Touches Make a Space Sing
At the Grand Canyon, shadows and light painted the landscape in dramatic color and shape. It reminds us that sometimes it's the bold choices, like a patterned tile, colorful rug, or statement art that make a space feel alive and personal. It doesn't take much to make your home unforgettable.

4. You Need Rest Stops on the Journey

Travel days can be long and draining, especially in the heat. We were always on the lookout for shade, cool indoor spots, or just a comfy place to pause. The same is true for your home. Think of where you drop your bags, kick off your shoes, or sip something cool. Every home needs little oases; intentional spaces that help you recharge.

5. Going Away Makes You Love Coming Home

Experiencing new landscapes and meeting people with different stories reminded me why I love what I do. Design is about connecting to the world, to yourself, and to others. Coming home after travel always gives me fresh gratitude for the comforts of home and renewed creativity. It’s a powerful reminder of why our homes matter so much.
