An international family in Wynnewood, PA dreams of a warm and welcoming family room.

Design Dilemmas

  • Unsure what to do with dated bulky built-in shelves, awkward mantel, and a problematic window configuration

  • How to bring the family room together when adding new pieces to their existing dining set and sofa

  • Choosing furnishings and window treatments that will be stain resistant and durable with children in the home for many years to come

Family Room Solutions

The guiding design concept for this family room was the blending of international heritage with the different personal preferences of husband and wife. Achieved with an eclectic mix of furniture and decor that strikes a balance between; organic and man-made; active and restful; modern and traditional.

  • First, the mantel became the focal point of the family room by augmenting it with an additional layer of drywall, molding, and contrasting paint color. Then a significant piece of art was selected to set the right mood, imbue color and sense of style

  • The bulky built-in shelves were removed for a more contemporary open feel. In their place, a wall mounted television, and appropriately sized window treatments were added.
  • Bringing everything together was achieved by incorporating additional durable pieces of furniture, with kid-friendly custom throw pillows, seat cushions, and window treatments in complementary colors and styles with the existing sofa and dining set
